KIVALINA
|
For decades, Kivalina has been experiencing gradual erosion. In 2004, a wind storm accelerated the erosion by several infrastructures; the school, the power plant's fuel tank farm and the airport. The storm also completely damaged the newly completed drain field a few days before the storm. The images you see are from the most recent storm surge which nearly compromised the runway. The Kivalina 1st Responders stepped in and saved the airport. |
September 25, 2015 Airport Erosion
Recent NewsOn September 24, 2015, Kivalina experienced a mild storm with winds gusting to 40 miles an hour. The wind died down but a storm surge began on a completely calm evening. The next morning, a concerned resident called the city office at 10:30 a.m. The airport was eroding and fast. The disaster lasted four days with no help from Division of Homeland Security despite the declaration of disaster, nor from Department of Transportation. The city was on their own with the Northwest Arctic Borough!
