Kivalina is a small town with a population of 478 (2021) consisting only of Inupiaq natives. It sits on an 8-mile long barrier reef where the town sits on 1/2 a mile of the island. The airport takes another section of the island adjacent to the city limits. The landfill takes the space following the airport. Beyond that is a thin stretch of land that leads to the other end of the barrier reef. There is no room to build. There are no movie theatres, no restaurants, no hotels, no places to hang out. The only activity is bingo.
